In the studio

Backgrounds

25 AUGUST 2017

These are a bunch of backgrounds/underpaintings that I have lying around the studio waiting for inspiration to hit me. Many of my abstract and surrealist paintings start with such a background; I let what is on the canvas influence the form and details of the composition.

The following background doesn't actually get dark towards the bottom; this is an effect due to the light sources all being ceiling lights. The painting is taller than some of the others here and the bottom of the painting is receiving significantly less light than the top. This is going to be a problem for my photographs of larger paintings, so my plan is to haul out some other lighting (perhaps my photography studio lights) whenever I have a bigger painting to shoot.

The following two small backgrounds have none of the darkness that the other backgrounds have gathered.
