Photojournal - Fall 2006

Fragments of Fall

Some days that I take photos, I don't end up shooting enough to make a full journal entry. I save up the photos from those days and when I have enough (typically once a quarter) I put them together as an entry. This is such an entry, for the fall of 2006.

Here's a shot from October 1, some spent flowerheads in a yellowy sun.

The day after that, I caught my friend Smudge hiding in the garden.
On the ninth of October, I went out to the Reifel Bird Sanctuary and found a whole lot of northern birds. For instance, this one is a Northern Harrier.
This duck, probing in the shallow water, is a Northern Shoveler.
..and that's his Northern Shoveler ladyfriend behind him.
On one of the paths in the refuge, I found this Northern Flicker.
And my last shot of the day, on my way home, was of these Northern Pumpkins in a field on Westham Island.

On October 22, I was hanging out in the garden at my building when I found a ladybug. This was interesting because it wasn't the usual Asian Multicolored Ladybug, but rather a 7-Spotted Ladybug (Coccinella Septempunctata). This is a native lady, where the others are invaders. It was nice to see her.

That same day, there was a nice cloudy colorful sunset.
I took several shots of it at different points in time.

All of these shots were taken from my balcony.
Late in the sunset, the river picked up a lot of the color.
On the 27th, I decided to try to work on my tree photography; trees are a subject that I have a hard time taking good photos of. I chose the little Japanese Maples in my building's courtyard as my subjects, and tried several different approaches and compositions.

On my way in from that session, I found my friend and roommate Zippy waiting for me on the stairs to our place.

My car accident intervened, along with a few days of photography that became their own entries, and I didn't have any leftovers until a month later on November 27. We had a good fall of snow overnight, but the day came out light and crisp, and I took some landscapes from my balcony. The next three are of houses and condos across the river.

And here's the boatyard that almost directly across.
On the 30th, we still had some snow left, and we had a clear colorful sunset. This photo is in about the same direction as the last one, with the boatyard just left of center.

And here's one just showing the tip of Poplar Island.

On the 10th of December, I put up three CD shelves in my front entranceway to hold camera equipment. I took this wide-angle snapshot of my newly-well-organized-and-handy camera stuff, so that I could send it out and be the envy of all my photographer friends. I keep thinking about adding a fourth shelf above the others.

The final day that contributes to this entry is the 30th of December. This was my last day in Virginia and I was only outdoors for a little while, in my brother's backyard.

Here's a female Northern Cardinal, on their deck railing.

Next up is a Song Sparrow from the grasses around a creek behind the yard.

Back by the deck, a House Finch eyed the sky as a vulture flew by.

And on the side fence, a White-throated Sparrow stopped to pose and bid me farewell.

And that completes my photography for the fall. I'll start the new year back in British Columbia.

Hoping all had a happy and birdy 2006,
Tom
