Model Max

On the 23rd of September, I went down to Cecil Green Park at UBC to look for some White-throated Sparrows that had been reported there. As I prowled around the park, the first thing I found was a Red-breasted Sapsucker, who, as usual, was hanging out on the side of a tree trunk.
I walked around for about an hour and a half, seeing various common things, such as this Savannah Sparrow, who was looking things over from his perch on high.
I also found one less-common thing, a Lincoln's Sparrow, in very spiffy sharp plumage.

But I didn't find any White-throated Sparrows, which would have been a lifer for me. I've gone out looking for them a few times before, always with no luck.

So I gave up on the White-throateds, thinking that maybe with the good weather they moved on. I went to Saturday lunch, ran some errands, and then headed home. On arriving, I found my friend Max in the courtyard. Oftentimes Max is Miss Friendly Kitty, coming straight up to anyone who looks at her; this behaviour makes her a difficult photographic subject. However, this time, she was in a real posing mood, and I got several good shots of her.

Shooting Max was a fun time; she's quite the photogenic cat.

After the cat shots, I went inside and changed to my macro lens. I then went around my building, looking for little things. The first thing I found was a jumping spider from the genus Eris out on one of our handrails. I've seen plenty of this species around the building before; they have nice markings and it's always tempting to try to get really close-in, detailed shots of them.

In this second shot, he's right at the end of the handrail, and I was able to get more detail on his face. (I still like the photo above better, though.)
The only other interesting thing I found was this little cocoon tied up on the side of one of our stucco walls. It looks like there's eggs in there. Probably spider eggs.

I was happy with the day's photos: I had some nice subjects at Cecil Green and some great shots of Max. I'll catch the White-throateds some other day.

Always happy with a kitty,
Tom
