On the 21st of August, I went and got on the ferry to Nanaimo, heading for a short but much-needed vacation. I had some ideas of things to do on the island but no set plans. As we left Horseshoe Bay, I went to the outside deck of the ferry to see if there were any good birds around. I didn't find any, and so I grudgingly took a few shots of Vancouver as it receded in the east. |

A cruise ship cruised by in front of us, doing the Johnny Horton thing. |

Before we got out into the open straight, we passed a few little islets. There was fog or smog or something in the air, and it turned the sky green. |

I went to an inside deck for the rest of the ride over. Once on the island, I drove north, as my plan was to eventually make it up to somewhere near the northern tip of the island. As I was driving, it became the early evening and I was treated to some really juicy but fleeting colors on the hills and mountains to the east. Here's one such scene, where I was able to get to the side of the road both safely and quickly enough to capture some nice browns and oranges. |

A short time later, I found myself looking eastward from the shore in the town of Qualicum Beach. The sunset colors were already coming out. |

Since this part of the island is basically just a mountain range, there were also mountains close to my west. The period of late-evening sun hitting the land was therefore short, as the sun dipped below the mountains well before true nightfall.
There was nothing to do but take silhouettish east-facing sunset photos as the sunset went through its various phases and colors. There's not much else to say about these photos. |

Across the street from the beach were a few small motels, and I checked into one of them (the Old Dutch Motel) for the night. I had a room at the end of the building, and the view I got when I entered the room (I couldn't find the light switch right away) was sufficiently inspiring that I took a few photos of it. The photos didn't turn out as nice as the effect was in real life, but here's one of the better ones of the bunch. |

The sunset colors and neon lights through the blinds were what had drawn me to the subject, but their dominant effect on the view just didn't show up in the photo. I'm still not sure what I would change to get the photo to turn out right. Sometimes it's like that, I guess.
Vacating whenever possible,
Tom
