Here I'm experimenting with a technique that SkyDancer has been poking around with lately: using a 2-d fractal to drive properties of a render. (Sky, in turn, picked up the idea from Jonathan Allen, who has a tutorial on the technique.) I've added a twist, using the fractal to shape the objects as well as to give it color and reflective properties. The objects are based on the following fractal, generated with KPT:
